Vintage Murano vase "Bolle" by Tapio Wirkkala for Venini, Italy, 1966

The Bolle, designed by Tapio Wirkkkala in 1966, is made of blown glass and handmade with the "incalmo" technique. The incalmo technique is very complex and consists of hot coupling two blown shapes, along their circumference, so as to obtain different coloured areas in the same object. His works can be found in major museums around the world and his activity in Venini profoundly influenced the Murano glass world. When Wirkkala, in the mid 60s, designed his first objects for Venini, he was already a world-renowned designer who had worked in various areas of design. It was Wirkkala who enhanced the "Incalmo" technique, and often combined it with "mezza filigree" and "murine" thanks to the skill of Venini's Master Glassmakers.
